Endometrial Biopsy
This test is designed to evaluate whether the lining of the uterus (endometrium) has been properly stimulated hormonally to allow a fertilized egg to implant and grow into a pregnancy. A tiny fragment of tissue from the endometrium is removed and examined under the microscope.
The cervix (mouth of the uterus) will be cleansed with a disinfectant and a small instrument will be inserted through the cervix into the endometrial cavity and the sample of endometrial tissue obtained. Some cramping may occur at the time of the procedure and occasionally for up to 15 minutes later. It is normal to have some vaginal bleeding after the procedure is performed. Proper timing of this test is critical if we are to obtain meaningful information. It is usually performed 10 to 13 days after ovulation. A pregnancy test will be run in the office prior to the biopsy. Please call the office if you have a full flow period on or before the day you are scheduled for the biopsy. Please keep your appointment if you are spotting. The results will be discussed with you once the report is back in the office - usually in 3 or 4 days. If you have questions, please call the office.
