Hysterosalpingogram

Diagnostic Studies: Hysterosalpingogram

This test is designed to evaluate the uterine cavity and the fallopian tubes. It is an x-ray study using contrast material (dye) that appears white on the x-ray. This test may reveal small tumors, scar tissue inside the uterine cavity, congenital abnormalities of the endometrial cavity, as well as determining if the fallopian tubes appear normal and are open.

This procedure is performed in the radiology department. A small tube is inserted vaginally into the cervical opening: dye is then injected, slowly filling the uterine cavity and the fallopian tubes. This will be viewed on a fluoroscopy screen and several x-rays will be taken. During the injection of the dye, you may experience some cramping and it may last for 1 to 2 hours. For this reason, many patients prefer to have someone accompany them to drive them home.

This test is performed after a menstrual period but before ovulation… usually 7 to 9 days after the start of the period. Please call the office when your period starts so we can schedule your hysterosalpingogram. A prescription for an antibiotic will be given to you to begin taking one day prior to your procedure. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me or speak to one of our nurses at (214) 823-2692, ext. 114.
